Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

This march, we are raising awareness for ovarian cancer.

Ovarian cancer affects women’s ovaries, typically over the age of 50. However, anyone who has ovaries is at risk of developing ovarian cancer. The ovaries are 2 tiny organs in a women’s reproductive system that tore eggs needed for pregnancy.

Although some women opt to have their ovaries removed, this does not mean there is no risk as ovarian cancer an also form in the fallopian tubes, along with the peritoneum (the lining of the stomach).

Although it is not common for ovarian cancer to be diagnosed as hereditary, there are instances where it does run in the family. However, only between 5 and 10 of 100 of those diagnosed are caused by an inherited gene.

What Are The Symptoms?

In some instances, the symptoms of ovarian cancer can be very subtle and result in months without a diagnosis or even a known issue.

 However, there are a few things to look out for:

Currently, there are no screening test for ovarian cancer, meaning that prevention can be more complicated. However, there are things you can do and experience that will reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, simply by gibing the ovaries a break.

Ovarian cancer becomes a risk when the ovaries are overworked, which is commonly during the menstrual cycle when an egg is released. However, when an egg is not released, the ovaries are not over-working, and the risk is reduced.

It is important that all women are aware of ovarian cancer and understand when they should be concerned. Simply knowing what the symptoms are and looking out for them could help save someone’s life.
