Infant Phototherapy Diapers

Phototherapy diapers have an integrated lining that prevents the absorption of blue light radiation and blocks blue light from reaching specific areas of the baby?s skin when undergoing jaundice treatment. The integrated lining protects the infants? genitalia from exposure to the blue light as a cautionary method of further protection. While standard
diapers allow exposure to the light, phototherapy diapers provide a protective barrier for the baby’s genital area and prevents overexposure to the light, which could potentially harm the sensitive skin in that region.

1. Efficient Exposure: The lights used in phototherapy need to reach as much of the baby’s skin surface as possible to be effective. Having the baby wear a diaper ensures that the light can penetrate the skin in the diaper area, where bilirubin can accumulate.
2. Protection of Genitalia: While the diaper allows exposure to the light, it also provides a protective barrier for the baby’s genital area and prevents overexposure to the light, which could potentially harm the sensitive skin in that region.
3. Hygiene and Comfort: Diapers help keep the baby clean and comfortable during the treatment. Babies undergoing phototherapy may have frequent bowel movements, and using diapers helps maintain hygiene.
4. Monitoring Output: The healthcare team can monitor the baby’s output, including urine and stool, to assess how well the treatment is working. This is important in determining the effectiveness of phototherapy.
5. Parental Involvement: Wearing a diaper allows parents or caregivers to participate in the care of the baby during phototherapy, including changing diapers as needed.

1. Remove the diaper from the outer packaging.
2. The black lining should be on the OUTER part of the diaper.
3. Ensure the diaper is fastened together using the straps.
4. To check the diaper is secured but not tight, two fingers should fit in the waistband of the diaper. If not, the diaper may be to tight for the infant and cause discomfort.
5. The diaper can be worn during sessions of blue light phototherapy.
6. The diapers are NOT reusable and should be disposed of appropriately after use.

1. Dry Skin: Phototherapy can sometimes lead to dryness of the skin. This dryness can be alleviated with the use of moisturizers or emollients recommended by your healthcare provider.
2. Redness and Irritation: The skin may become red and irritated in response to phototherapy, similar to mild sunburn. This is usually temporary and resolves after treatment. Applying soothing creams or lotions as recommended by your healthcare provider can help.
3. Increased Sensitivity to Sunlight: After phototherapy, the treated skin may be more sensitive to sunlight. It’s essential to protect the treated areas from direct sunlight for a period after treatment, as excessive sun exposure can worsen skin irritation.
4. Skin Changes: Prolonged phototherapy may lead to changes in skin pigmentation, especially in individuals with darker skin tones. These changes are usually reversible once treatment is discontinued.
5. Itching: Some individuals may experience itching during or after phototherapy. Your healthcare provider may recommend antihistamines or other medications to alleviate itching.
6. Blistering or Burns: In rare cases, phototherapy can cause blistering or burns, particularly if the treatment is not administered correctly or if the patient has sensitive skin. Proper care and monitoring by healthcare professionals can help prevent severe side effects.
7. In cases of emergency, remember your Duty of Candour.
