Storing Breastmilk:

Storing breast milk properly is essential to maintain its nutritional value and safety for your baby. Here are some guidelines for breast milk storage:

Containers: Store breast milk in clean containers made of glass or BPA-free plastic. You can use breast milk storage bags specifically designed for this purpose. Make sure the containers are tightly sealed to prevent leakage and contamination.

Labeling: Label each container with the date when the milk was expressed. If you are storing milk in multiple containers, label them with the earliest date to ensure that you use the oldest milk first.

Storage Temperatures:

At room temperature (up to 77°F or 25°C): Freshly expressed breast milk can be kept at room temperature for up to 4 hours. If the room is particularly warm (above 77°F or 25°C), milk should be used or refrigerated within 2 hours.

In the refrigerator (between 32°F to 39°F or 0°C to 4°C): Breast milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 to 5 days.

In the freezer (at 0°F or -18°C): Breast milk can be stored in the freezer for varying durations depending on the type of freezer:

In a typical freezer compartment within a refrigerator: Up to 2 weeks.

In a separate deep freezer (with a constant temperature of 0°F or -18°C): Up to 6 months to 12 months or more.

  • Thawing and Warming: When you’re ready to use the stored breast milk, you can thaw it by placing it in the refrigerator overnight or by running it under warm water. Avoid microwaving breast milk, as it can create hot spots and destroy nutrients. Instead, warm it gently by placing the container in a bowl of warm water.
  • Do Not Refreeze: Once breast milk has been thawed, it should be used within 24 hours and should not be refrozen.
  • Hygiene: Always wash your hands before expressing, handling, or storing breast milk. Make sure all containers and pumping equipment are clean and sterilized before use.
