A Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus or GBS) Rapid Test Device for swab samples is a diagnostic tool used to detect the presence of Group B Streptococcus bacteria in swab samples taken from the vaginal or rectal area of pregnant women. GBS is a common bacterium found in the lower genital tract and rectum of many healthy adults, but it can cause serious infections in newborns if transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth.

The test procedure typically involves taking a swab sample from the vaginal and/or rectal area of the pregnant woman and then applying the sample to the test device. The device contains specific reagents that react with GBS antigens if the bacteria are present in the sample. The appearance of lines or other indicators on the test strip within a certain timeframe indicates a positive result, indicating the presence of GBS.

GBS rapid test devices for swab samples are valuable tools for screening pregnant women for GBS colonization during late pregnancy, typically between 35 to 37 weeks of gestation. Identifying pregnant women who are colonized with GBS allows for appropriate interventions, such as administration of intrapartum antibiotics during labor, to reduce the risk of transmitting the bacteria to the newborn and prevent neonatal GBS disease. Rapid test devices offer quick and convenient results, enabling timely management and reducing the risk of adverse outcomes in newborns. Positive results from rapid tests may necessitate additional confirmatory testing and clinical evaluation to guide appropriate management strategies.
