The digestive system is composed of several organs and structures that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste. The main components of the digestive system include:

Mouth:

  • Teeth: Break down food into smaller pieces through chewing (mastication).
  • Salivary Glands: Produce saliva, which contains enzymes that begin the digestion of carbohydrates.
  • Tongue: Assists in mixing food with saliva and helps in swallowing.

Pharynx (Throat):

A passageway for food and air, it directs food from the mouth to the oesophagus.

Oesophagus:

A muscular tube that transports food from the pharynx to the stomach through a series of contractions known as peristalsis.

Stomach:

A muscular organ that mixes food with gastric juices, which contain acid and enzymes that further break down food into a semi-liquid form called chime.

Small Intestine:

  • Duodenum: The first section where most chemical digestion occurs, with the aid of bile from the liver and digestive enzymes from the pancreas.
  • Jejunum: The middle section where a significant amount of nutrient absorption occurs.
  • Ileum: The final section where absorption of nutrients continues and then moves the remaining content to the large intestine.

Large Intestine:

  • Cecum: The beginning of the large intestine, which connects to the ileum and includes the appendix.
  • Colon: Divided into the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon, it absorbs water and salts from the remaining indigestible food matter.
  • Rectum: Stores faeces until they are excreted.
  • Anus: The final part of the digestive tract, through which faeces are expelled from the body.

Accessory Organs:

  • Liver: Produces bile, which helps in the digestion and absorption of fats.
  • Gallbladder: Stores and concentrates bile, releasing it into the small intestine.
  • Pancreas: Produces digestive enzymes and bicarbonate, which are released into the small intestine to aid in digestion.

Each of these components plays a crucial role in the overall process of digestion, ensuring that the body can efficiently process and utilize the nutrients from the food we consume.
